Vieux Lyon part 2

(I've decided to use blogger to upload my photos instead of photobucket, so you can click on the pictures to see the enlarged version)

We explored many traboules (little hidden channels that link roads and buildings together). Traboules were used before the war to transport silk from Crois Rouss (where silk was made) to the saone river to be shipped off.
During the war, these traboules were escape routes. Soldiers also amushed in there to kill unsuspecting german soldiers.

Now, people who stay in Vieux Lyon still use the Traboules.

Well outside a house.

Tower

Protestant temple. They don't call protestant churches church. They call them temples. Protestant temples look very bland compared to catholic churches. No bell tower, no statues.

Another catholic church seen across the Saone.

Me, again, against the Saone.

St Jean (pronounced JOHN)

We were the first time to reach the final destination and complete the list of things we were supposed to do. :D

YAY! Les Femme fatale: taine, alejandra and me at the final destination, Place St Jean.

This was where I met my first Mean Frenchie. Mean Frenchie came in the form of an old woman. In the race, we had to find out the recipe of one lyonnais dish by asking people for it.

Taiane intially posed the question, and the woman said she didn't want to answer because Taiane couldn't speak perfect french. I then rephrased the question and posed it again, only to get a "I don't understand" back. I was quite taken aback because the people here I've met so far have been very nice and helpful. Oh well, tant pis.

Place St Jean has a big wall with life-like drawings all the famous Lyonnais, past and present.

Louis and August Lumiere, the inventors and creators of cinema.

St Exupery, the dude who wrote the little prince.

Ampere, the dude all EE students love to hate. There's even an Ampere museum in the outskirts of Lyon.

Among others up on the wall: Claude Bernard and the dude who owns Olympique Lyonnais. Speaking of Olympique, the blackmarket tickets for the champions League match against man U are going for 200euros and up. :(

After the amazing race game, we were invited to our teacher's house for cheese degustation. She stays near St paul station, in Vieux Lyon.

Another cathedral.

Me with another statue.

This is a Passerelle built over the Saone. It's only for people and bicycles.

Building with statue.

Will blog about Fourviere and Teacher's house later. :)
